Cultural Competency in Alaska

Cultural Competency and Diversity This learning path provides behavioral health professionals with foundational knowledge and practical skills to strengthen cultural awareness, cultural humility, and culturally responsive practice. Participants will explore how culture, identity, historical experiences, implicit bias, and systemic inequities influence communication, relationships, engagement, and treatment outcomes within behavioral health settings. Through education, self-reflection, and case-based learning, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how cultural factors shape individual experiences and how providers can create safe, respectful, and inclusive environments that honor diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. Special emphasis is placed on Alaska's diverse communities, including Alaska Native populations, the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma, and the role of cultural responsiveness in promoting equity and trust in behavioral health care.
