Self-Disclosure for Counseling and Psychotherapy

Self-Disclosure for Counseling and Psychotherapy

Self-disclosure can be a powerful therapeutic intervention when used intentionally and ethically. This course provides behavioral health professionals with a structured framework for evaluating self-disclosure decisions through the lens of client welfare, ethical practice, cultural humility, and clinical effectiveness. Participants will review professional ethical standards, explore common disclosure dilemmas, and learn practical strategies for responding to client questions while maintaining appropriate therapeutic boundaries. The course introduces the WAIT–BRIEF–RETURN framework to support sound clinical decision-making and includes guidance for documentation, supervision, and consultation. By the end of this training, participants will be better equipped to use self-disclosure as a purposeful clinical tool rather than a reactive interpersonal response.
